When an excavator, loader or forklift breaks down in the field, the repair bill is only part of what you lose. A crew standing idle, a schedule slipping day by day and missed deadlines usually cost far more. Why Preventive Maintenance Matters So Much
We see the same pattern in this industry again and again: maintenance is treated as an expense and postponed, and then the machine fails on the busiest day of the job. In reality, an unplanned breakdown costs many times more than scheduled maintenance: you are not just paying for parts and labour — every hour the machine sits idle, the crew and equipment that depend on it sit idle too. Worse, a small neglected issue, such as a filter that is not changed on time, shortens the life of far more expensive components like the engine or the hydraulic pump. Preventive maintenance is simply the discipline of catching a failure while it is still cheap to fix.
Daily Checks: Ten Minutes of the Operator's Time
The first link in a good maintenance programme is not the workshop — it is the operator. A short walk-around at the start of every shift catches most failures before they are born:
- Fluid levels: Check engine oil, coolant and hydraulic oil. A dropping level is very often the first sign of a leak.
- Leak check: Look under the machine and around hose connections. An oil stain on the ground, a sweating hose or a damp fitting should be taken seriously.
- Undercarriage and tyres: On tracked machines, check track tension and wear on rollers and sprockets; on wheeled machines, check tyre pressure and tread condition.
- General visual check: Loose bolts, the start of a crack, damaged pins and bushings or a warning light that no longer works should be noted and reported.
Thinking in Service Hours, Not Calendar Days
Heavy equipment maintenance schedules are built around operating hours, not calendar dates, because wear advances with every hour the engine runs. Intervals vary by make and model, but the established industry logic looks like this:
Engine oil and filters
Engine oil and the oil filter are changed together at set hour intervals, and the fuel and air filters are renewed on their own schedules. On a dusty site, do not wait for the interval to check the air filter — a clogged filter raises fuel consumption and strains the engine.
Hydraulic oil and filter
The hydraulic system is the muscle of any machine. When hydraulic oil and the return filter are not changed on time, wear accelerates in the pump, valves and cylinders. Darkening oil, foaming or a burnt smell are all signs that a sample should be analysed without waiting for the next interval. Transmission, final drives and grease points
Transmission and final drive oils are changed at longer intervals, but their levels should be monitored regularly. The grease points on the boom, bucket and linkage pins are the most commonly neglected item of all: pins and bushings that never see grease develop play, and as the play grows, the repair turns into serious machining and welding work.
Practical tip: Hang a simple maintenance card in the cab and write down the date and hour-meter reading at every oil and filter change. Nobody has to work out the next service from memory, and a missed interval is spotted at a glance.
Seasonal Preparation: Summer Heat and Winter
On the Aegean coast, summer means long working days and high temperatures. Before the season starts, the radiator and oil cooler cores should be blown out with compressed air, and the coolant and fan belt checked — and remember that hydraulic oil also degrades faster in the heat. Before winter, review the antifreeze concentration, battery charge, glow plugs and the water separator on the fuel filter. Season changes are the ideal moment to clear the backlog of small postponed jobs in one visit.
How to Recognise a Neglected Machine
If several of these symptoms appear together, the machine is asking for help:
- Dark or blue exhaust smoke, or a clear rise in fuel consumption
- Slower hydraulic movements, loss of power or juddering
- A whine or groan coming from the pump or valves
- Noticeable play in pins and bushings, knocking during operation
- Oil and coolant that constantly need topping up, a growing stain under the machine
- Engine temperature climbing earlier than it used to
These symptoms never cure themselves — they come back bigger. Acting early often turns a fault into a one-day workshop job instead of a major repair.
